ANOTHER EXCITING AFTERNOON OF TOP JAZZ!

BEN WILCOCK & THE JELLY ROLLS
July 4th sees us hosting an act that promises to be as exciting and musically innovative as Neon Quaver. Ben Wilcock and the Jelly Rolls is a group that "possesses an inescapable sense of fun , while swinging like crazy, they radiate mischief as they take a dash of Harlem Stride and Fats Waller and mix it with big swing a la Errol Garner and Oscar Peterson" according to reviewer John Fenton.

Led by acclaimed stride pianist Ben Wilcock, who will be playing piano - not keys, multi-instrumentalist Dan Yeabsley on double bass and saxophones (last here with the Dancing & Drinking Socy) and the "effervescent" John Rae on drums make up the trio. Their name comes from pianist Jelly Roll Morton, with the group paying homage to earlier styles, while diversifying into more modern approaches, mixing originalwith jazz standards.

Doors open at 3.45pm for a 4.30pm start at the New Plymouth Club, Gill Street. Cash only entry $30 casual, $20 NP Club members, visiting and local jazz members $15, $5 students.
